![]() ![]() A test of this hypothesis was done using data collected in a retirement community. According to a study done by Lee and Markides, it was hypothesized that all three types of activity would be associated with a person’s life satisfaction. Actions turn into operations when they become routine and unconscious. Participation in an activity is performing conscious actions that have an immediate and defined goal. Leont’ev pointed out that people engage in actions that do no satisfy a need by themselves, but they do contribute towards the eventual satisfaction of a need. Tools can be used to understand the object or to improve the communication and motivation of the activity participants. When individuals engage and interact with their environment, the result is the production of tools. Activity objects can be a concrete thing (such as a program) or something more abstract like an idea. The idea behind many programs and services for older adults is that activities have important benefits and that they contribute to increased life satisfaction for everyone.Īccording to an article written in the Journal of Computer Science and Technology, activity is defined as the way a subject (either an individual or a group) moves towards an object with the purpose of getting certain results. It can be used by a variety of disciplines to understand the way people act. Leont’ev sought to understand human activities. After some thorough research on this topic I was able to come up with some great information about this theory that I will incorporate into this paper and make you understand the theory that way that I understand it.Īctivity Theory (AT) was initially developed by Leont’ev during the twentieth century in the former Soviet Union (Leont’ev, 1978 Leont’ev, 1981a, 1981b). For the purpose of this paper, I am going to focus on the Activity Theory of aging. From Vaillant’s aging well, to Erikson’s life stages, to Leont’ev’s activity theory, there is a lot to learn and to understand. Bifulco Throughout this semester we have come across many psychological and social theories. The cultural-historical activity theory was a useful tool to describe and analyze the social aspects of informal learning.RUNNING HEAD: ACTIVITY THEORY Activity Theory of Aging Long Island University-C. ![]() Furthermore, the study verified the learning capacities of informal learning. This study showed that older women continue to develop to adapt to changing social environments through learning. The findings of this study revealed a social situation that influences the everyday life of older married women, the aging issues that women face in later life and the changes in their daily lives to solve the issues. The collected data was reduced and classified by categorical strategy and was then connected according to cultural historical activity theory. Data was collected from older married women who were born between 19 through participant observation and interview. Fieldwork was conducted in major cities in South Korea. ![]() Feminist gerontology, informal learning, and cultural-historical activity theory as a theoretical framework guided the investigation. This study employed an ethnographic approach from the life-course perspective. Assuming that learning is one possible outcome of human activity, the study described and analyzed these changes as informal learning in a social process of aging. It sought specifically to find the changes older women have made in order to deal with the aging-related issues that they face. This study examined the social process of aging among Korean older married women from older women’s perspectives. Consequently, little is known about how aging in Korean society affects the lives of older women. Specifically, older women, who are traditionally at greater risk of poverty, are referred to as a social problem or as passive recipients, and the quality of life of older women in an aging society is often ignored. From an economic perspective, older people are too often seen in negative terms. The aging population has rapidly increased in South Korea. ![]() Sharon Louise Falkenstern, Committee Member Keywords: Fred Michael Schied, Dissertation Advisor/Co-Advisorįred Michael Schied, Committee Chair/Co-Chair ![]()
